Surgery

Owen had a Hydrocele repair surgery on Monday. (click on the link for a description) We noticed an abnormality on his little boy parts a few months ago and our pediatrician recommended Owen consult with a urologist. The urologist confirmed that Owen would need surgery to correct the problem.

This was not the first time that Owen has undergone anesthesia - he got tubes in his ears at about 18 mo. So, we knew what to expect as far as recovery.

He was such a big brave boy, and having a portable DVD player helped pass the long waiting time. He had to be at the surgery center at 6am to check in and go through pre-op procedures and the surgery didn't begin until 8am. He was finished by about 8:30 and we were able to see him in 2nd stage recovery about 9:00. He was pretty much a mess, just like before. Screaming/crying/hyperventilating but as soon as I was able to get him into my lap and begin rocking him he started to calm down. It was so pitiful! We were able to leave by about 9:30.

We were told to keep him quiet for the first 48 hours. The first 12 were easy...he was just cashed out on the couch watching movies all day. After dinner he was getting back to his old tricks. Now, he's still recovering well, but he avoids having to see his 'owies' at all costs.

So, this has caused some slight regression on our potty training success.
He puts off going to the bathroom until the last possible minute and always wants help pulling his pants on and off. He's been avoiding bowel movements, so hopefully this phase will pass soon and he'll be back to his regular potty routines that he had gotten so good at.

Eli stayed home with his first baby-sitter. I was so nervous leaving at such an early hour because he's still not totally consistent on a wake time in the morning, but he did great praise the Lord!
